Independent Living AT Program

Assistive Technology (AT) can make a remarkable difference in the lives of individuals with significant disabilities, from enabling them to get into and out of a vehicle or home to enable them to hear conversations with friends and family. The Freedom Center is very pleased to have a small grant from the Maryland State Department of Education, Division of Rehabilitation Services to provide Assistive Technology Services to eligible individuals.

What is included? Assistive Technology comes in many forms, including the following:

Adaptive computers to provide access to the Internet and email, hand controls to allow someone to drive their own vehicle, ramps and lifts to access your home, hearing aids to improve communication, eyeglasses to improve vision, etc. The Freedom Center can help you remove barriers that prevent you from living, working, and playing in your home and community. With assistive technology, The Freedom Center can help you achieve more independence so you do not have to live in an institution.

 You should know:

  • Grant funding for AT is limited.  The Freedom Center is able to provide up to $7,500.00 for a two-year   period.

  • You will be asked to help find additional sources of funding for the AT you have requested.

  • The Freedom Center will look for other financial resources to purchase AT, find good, serviceable AT, or find donations to fulfill your request.

  • Depending on your income, you may be required to contribute to the cost of the AT according to a sliding scale.  To determine if you may have a financial contribution, you will be required to submit to The Freedom Center your personal/family most recent tax information and income.

  • The Freedom Center will not reimburse you for goods, equipment, services or modifications not preauthorized.

  • The Freedom Center would appreciate the return of portable  and usable AT when no longer needed.

  • There may be a waiting list for services.
